October 27 Recap: Our State Magazine

Background:

· Located in Greensboro

· Started in 1933 by a radio personality

· Designed the magazine to make people feel better during the depression

· Mission to tell the good things of North Carolina

· Great photography and great design

· 150,000 paid circulation, 12,000 off the newsstand

· Monthly

Uses Facebook to find stories—suggestions through facebook users, ask questions through facebook.

· 10 hours a week, some flexibility

· Fall, spring, summer. Summer is most competitive—get in touch with Diane around mid-January.

· Try to pull interns in as a part of the staff

· Do interviews, edit, and go out on “story-finding trips,” etc.

· Comprehensive, inclusive experience

· Encourages participation
