October 13 Recap: Independent Weekly

Independent Weekly (www.indyweek.com)

Lisa Sorg-editor

About Indy Week:

· Every Wednesday in print plus a website and blogs (+multimedia)

· Covers 4 counties, 45 thousand circulation

· Evenly divided between news and culture

· Website like a newspaper—breaking news everyday

· Print: long form journalism, more magazine style journalism

· Locally owned, 27 years old

· Most important thing about the Indy is the types of stories they cover: More detailed, more in-depth, longer

· Small newpaper, less than 10 people putting out the paper (not including freelancers)

· Always looking for freelancers (can email Lisa and she’ll connect you to the right person)

· Freelancers come up with their own story ideas, but are also assigned stories. (15 cents a word)

Internships:

· Spring, Summer, Fall

· 1 or 2, sometimes 3

· Culture and news sections

· At least 10 hours a week

· Unpaid

· Writing, research, some grunt work

· Send Lisa an email with a resume and clips, tell why you want to intern at the Indy, availability (if you know), what you like to do, where your interests lie (news, culture, PR, marketing, sales, design)

· What makes an applicant stand out? Spell everyone’s names right, use good grammar, good spelling, understanding the paper, reading the paper, tell what you enjoy, what ideas you have, how can you help the Indy? How are you valuable? What do you want to get out of it?

· Interns always invited to staff meetings where the staff gets into the nitty-gritty of the stories

“Read good magazines, and a couple trash ones for fun”

“No one taught me how to write. I did it by reading and analyzing.”

Magazines give you the time to spend with people, let them lead the story and give information

“Magazine writing is worth the effort, it’s much more rewarding.”
